Preparing your soil ahead of the short rains

Practical land preparation steps that protect yield when the rains arrive late, early or unevenly.
Rainfall in northern Tanzania has become harder to plan around. Land preparation is one of the few parts of the season still fully under your control.
Start by clearing and incorporating crop residue early rather than burning it. Residue worked into the topsoil improves structure and helps the field hold moisture through a dry spell mid season.
If you plough, avoid working the soil when it is too wet, which compacts it and creates a hardpan that roots struggle to break through. On sloped plots, work across the slope rather than up and down it, and keep contour bunds or grass strips in place to slow runoff.
Plan your planting lines and spacing before the first rains rather than during them. When the rains do come, the window for timely planting can be only a few days, and fields that are already prepared get planted on time. Late planting is one of the most common and most expensive yield losses we see.
If you use manure or compost, apply it a few weeks ahead so it has time to break down. Fresh manure applied at planting can burn young seedlings and tie up nitrogen exactly when the crop needs it.
